We are Committed to the welfare of at-risk individuals and to the Safe & Professional intervention by adults when an individual's behavior is harmful to themselves or others. We Care about at-risk individuals. This is an issue that we think is best stated by Edwin Markham when he said, “He drew a circle to shut me out. Heretic, rebel a thing to flout. But, love and I had the wit to win. We drew a circle that took him in.” There must be a circle of caring for these individuals. We believe that there is no substitute for Competency in the adults who deal with at-risk individuals. A myriad of skills must be developed by adults to ensure professional intervention. We believe that adults must be Courageous when they deal with at-risk individuals. This is not the courage of the street, but rather a Professional Courage that requires adults to “Do what’s right, even when it’s difficult.” This means we must work with misbehavior in a way that promotes positive growth and development.
